What are pesticides?

Vegetables are treated by chemicals called pesticides to protect against various diseases. These chemicals are used to:

  • increase world production of vegetables
  • improve the appearance of vegetables
  • extend the life of vegetables on the market

The health correctness of agricultural products depends on whether producers cling to the instructions for proper use of pesticides.

They primarily are absorbed in the outer part of the fruit and vegetables or, if we apply following recommendations can remove up to 70% of the rest of pesticides. The effectiveness depends on proper hygiene and preparation of fruits and vegetables. The most important thing in the removal of the rest of pesticides is thorough washing of fruits and vegetables.

Proper preparation of vegetables

  • Wash thoroughly before cutting and cooking
  • In leafy vegetables, remove outer leaves, and then wash each leaf separately under running water
  • Vegetables with the rigid exterior parts should be washed under running water for several minutes
  • Cauliflower and broccoli should be segmented into smaller parts, then washed under running water
  • When preparing for baby, toddlers and pregnant women, the water in which you boil the vegetables should be thrown, as it may contain harmful amounts of the rest of pesticides.

Proper preparation of fruits

  • Berries should be carefully reviewed, remove any dirt and all damaged grains in order to not spoil other grains. Should be washed under running water.
